During this commercial RTU service call, we located a refrigerant leak in the refrigeration circuit, repaired the leaking connection, tested the system, and recharged the unit to restore proper cooling operation.
During our inspection of this commercial rooftop HVAC system, we located a refrigerant leak at a connection in the refrigeration circuit. Refrigerant leaks can reduce cooling capacity, cause abnormal system pressures, increase run times, and eventually lead to additional HVAC system problems if left unrepaired
Repairing the Commercial RTU Refrigerant Leak
After locating the source of the refrigerant leak, ChiWest Heating & Cooling repaired the leaking connection and prepared the refrigeration system for operation. The system was then tested and serviced before refrigerant was added. Properly repairing the leak before recharging the system helps restore cooling performance and prevents continued refrigerant loss.
Pressure Testing the Refrigerant Leak Repair
After repairing the refrigerant leak, we pressurized the refrigeration system with nitrogen to verify the repair and ensure the system was properly sealed. This pressure test helps confirm that the repaired connection is holding before the system is evacuated to remove moisture and non-condensables. After evacuation, the system is ready to be properly recharged with refrigerant.
Deep Vacuum and System Evacuation
After the nitrogen pressure test confirmed the repair was holding, we pulled a deep vacuum on the refrigeration system. Evacuating the system removes moisture, air, and other non-condensables before refrigerant is added. This important step helps protect the refrigeration system and ensures proper operation after the repair.
Recharging the Commercial RTU With R-410A
After completing the deep vacuum, we recharged the commercial rooftop unit with R-410A refrigerant using a digital refrigerant scale to accurately measure the charge. System pressures and cooling operation were monitored as the unit was returned to normal operation.
