Commercial RTU Refrigerant Leak Repair in Chicago | Rooftop HVAC Repair

When a commercial rooftop HVAC unit is not cooling properly, a refrigerant leak may be one of the causes. ChiWest Heating & Cooling recently completed a commercial RTU refrigerant leak repair in Chicago after locating a leak in the refrigeration circuit of a rooftop air conditioning system.

Our commercial HVAC repair process included refrigerant leak detection, repairing the leaking connection, nitrogen pressure testing, pulling a deep vacuum, recharging the system with R-410A refrigerant, and testing the rooftop unit for proper cooling operation.

ChiWest Heating & Cooling provides commercial HVAC repair in Chicago, including rooftop unit repair, RTU repair, commercial AC repair, refrigerant leak detection, refrigerant leak repair, compressor troubleshooting, electrical troubleshooting, and commercial HVAC maintenance.

Diagnosing a Refrigerant Leak on a Commercial Rooftop Unit

A commercial air conditioner that is low on refrigerant should be inspected to determine why the refrigerant was lost. Continually adding refrigerant without locating the source of the leak does not correct the underlying problem.

During this commercial rooftop AC repair, we inspected the refrigeration system and located the leaking connection.

Common signs of a commercial HVAC refrigerant problem can include poor cooling, long run times, low suction pressure, abnormal system pressures, icing, insufficient cooling capacity, and a building that struggles to reach the thermostat setting.

Commercial RTU Refrigerant Leak Repair

Once the refrigerant leak was located, ChiWest Heating & Cooling repaired the leaking connection.

Proper commercial refrigerant leak repair is important because refrigerant loss can reduce the cooling capacity of a rooftop HVAC system and potentially contribute to additional system problems.

For businesses searching for commercial AC repair near me, commercial HVAC repair near me, RTU repair near me, or rooftop AC repair in Chicago, refrigerant leak detection should be part of the diagnostic process when system conditions indicate a possible loss of refrigerant.

Nitrogen Pressure Testing the Refrigeration System

After completing the refrigerant leak repair, we pressurized the refrigeration system with nitrogen.

The nitrogen pressure test allowed us to verify that the repaired connection was holding before evacuating and recharging the system.

Pressure testing is an important part of professional commercial HVAC refrigerant leak repair because the refrigeration circuit should be verified before refrigerant is added back into the rooftop unit.

Deep Vacuum and HVAC System Evacuation

After the nitrogen pressure test confirmed that the repair was holding, we pulled a deep vacuum on the refrigeration system.

Evacuating an air-conditioning system helps remove air, moisture, and other non-condensables from the refrigeration circuit before refrigerant is introduced.

Proper evacuation is an important step when performing commercial rooftop unit refrigerant repairs and helps prepare the refrigeration system for recharging and normal operation.

Recharging the Commercial RTU With R-410A Refrigerant

After completing the evacuation process, we recharged the commercial rooftop unit with R-410A refrigerant.

A digital refrigerant scale was used to accurately measure the refrigerant charge. The commercial RTU was then operated while system performance and cooling operation were monitored.

This completed the RTU leak repair, pressure test, evacuation, R-410A recharge, and commercial AC system testing.
